A slice of Heaven. Pizza by the Slice - published in the January 2008 edition iin the GS magazine.
".......I recently set off on a journey along the Grand Strand to locate and find a delicious pizza slice.........I found some amazing slices that will truly melt in your mouth.......These places left a memorable impression on me and proved to me that my journey to find a delectable pizza slice was not as hard as I thought it would be.
BADA-BING
"This is an excellent Sicilian pizza, and I enjoyed every bite. A good pizza makes you want more, even when your belly says no. I succumbed to the urge and stuffed two more pieces down. You can fold it, but I recommend a fork"

Bada Bing! Italian Ristorante

Setting the Table
There's a little bit - okay, a lot - of camp to be found at Bada Bing! Italian Ristorante, beginning with the Sopranos-referencing name of the place. There's also "Goodfellas" and "Sopranos" posters on the wall, and an online menu that promises prices that won't "breaka da bank." "Feed the mob, your goombas or just the famiglia," it reads. "We maka you da food that you justa can'ta refuse! Da fresh taste that you woulda die for!"
Yeah, I know. But consider: it's on Kings Highway in a prime tourist-trapping location. Folks are much more likely to "taka" the kids to the Bing (a phrase that, if you ever watched "The Sopranos," makes you feel a little uneasy) than to someplace called "Carrucci's Café Rustica" or some such.
Also consider that the place grows its own herbs (indeed, I saw two or three large basil plants), makes everything to order (including individual slices of pizza), makes its pizza dough and "gravies" (i.e., tomato-based sauces) from scratch, and serves an impressive collection of cold beers (I decided against the wine, as I saw it was all $3.50 a glass. I know, I'm a snob).
Perhaps most importantly, consider the place has a wonderfully unstuffy quality about it, and a refreshing upfrontness that makes up for any sartorial missteps. I mean, how can you not like a place that lists "Myrtle Beach's famous tap water - No Charge" on its menu?
Down the Hatch
After ordering a cold Newcastle - which is not a good pairing with Italian food, necessarily, but I was thirsty for more than a watery domestic (also a great EP by the band Pavement, incidentally) - we decided on a cheese ravioli with marinara gravy ($6) and the eggplant parmesan ($9.95) with a side of pasta.
You can't talk about either of these dishes - and indeed, much of the Bing's food in general, without referencing the homemade marinara. Made with a not-so-much-traditional base that includes green bell peppers, carrots and celery along with the tomatoes, it's nonetheless quite tasty - it's tart without taking the leap into sour, and agreeably sweet yet still firmly encamped in the savory side of things. (Due to the sauce's chunkiness, you really don't miss the meat; vegetarians in particular might want to check the place out. There's a ton of things you can order meat-free, and, as long as you don't think too hard about the content of the movies and TV shows those aforementioned posters reference, you can eat in blood-free peace.)
We ordered the cheese ravioli in the smaller of the two sizes offered, and, unless you're a longshoreman or visiting Clemson defensive lineman, you'll probably want to as well. Nothing fancy here, but the pasta was cooked nicely to al dente, and the whole thing was served up piping hot - if your pores need opening, take a Bada Bing steam.
The eggplant parmesan too was enjoyable. (Like with the ravioli, it's not high cuisine, but it's not one of those iffy chain joints with "chefs" cooking "grandma's secret recipe" either. When you're here, you might not be family, but at least you're treated like a paying customer and not a number on the bottom line. Rant over.) Thinly sliced and appropriately egged and breaded and baked with marinara, mozzarella and parmesan cheeses, it's a very filling dish, if for the simple fact that you get several large "slices" of eggplant. After a bit, the bottom of the dish where the eggplant sat got a little watery due to the large side of pasta, but that's something that could be rectified by a quick toss in the colander.
We ordered a couple Cannoli (cannolis? - either way, $2.50) to go, because...well, because it seemed like a romantic notion at the time (I've seen lots of gangster movies, you see). When I inquired as to whether or not they were homemade, our waitress smiled and said..."well, sort of...the filling is hand-squeezed." Now, that might not be the kind of family those chain TV ads promise, but it damn sure sounds like my family.
Check, Please
Students, teachers, military, law enforcement officers and firemen (oh my) have a special of their own: two one-topping pizza slices and a fountain drink for $3.50. I'm not sure about those uniformed folks, but I'm quite aware the first two don't bring in the big bucks.
And that's pretty much the kind of place this is - the kind of place to get a slice for lunch, maybe have a couple cold beers and some spaghetti after a long day at work. It's not fast food, and it's not Mario Batali either. It is what it is: homemade, fresh, and served without a lot of pomp and circumstance.
That sounds a lot like my family too, actually.
